December Enrichment Review

Hello Sisters!  For this month's enrichment we did a service project with the Greater Rochester’s Section of the National Council of Jewish Women to provide feminine hygiene products to those who cannot afford them.  I don't know about you, but I really hadn't thought about this being a problem because I have never had the struggle to afford them.  Did you know that these items are not covered by the SNAP or WIC programs?  Did you know that we pay sales tax on these items that are necessary?  I didn't, as naive as that sounds.

The activity was SOOOO fun, I'm not even kidding.  We were working and laughing and talking and bonding.  And even though the event is over, the need is still real.  There is currently a bill NY A7555 currently awaiting it's turn on the Senate floor.  We can make a difference simply by letting our representatives know that we support this bill.  Here is a link to do that, it is super easy and takes just a few minutes. CLICK HERE TO SUPPORT BILL

Afterwards, we had a nice dinner and loads of yummy cookies.  Chatting and bonding with our sisters is never boring or dull.  I have enjoyed every activity I have attended.  Our enrichment sisters put much time and thought into these activities and they don't disappoint.  I personally wish to thank them for all that they do. :) And we even made the local newspaper! Democrat and Chronicle article click here

Friday Food Day

We had a great Valentines Enrichment meeting last night, making cards and chocolates.  Liese brought some Healthy chocolate cookies for us to sample and they were a hit!  They are so simple to make.

2 Ingredient Cookies

Ingredients:

  1. 2 large old bananas
  2. 1 cup of oats (quick or regular! If you use regular, we'd suggest chopping them a little so everything holds together better)

*Then add in what sounds yummy to you! (or nothing) We love:

  • a handful of chocolate chips
  • crushed walnuts
  • cinnamon
  • raisins

Directions:

Since all bananas are different sizes, the needed measurements can vary.  If it seems too runny and the cookies would flatten out too much, add in more oatmeal.  And make sure to not add in TOO many mix-ins as the cookies won't hold together very well.
This recipe makes about 16 cookies.  Cook them at 350 degrees for 15 minutes on a GREASED cookie sheet.

Resolutions and Goals

Enrichment Night
This year we are going to focus on health and gratitude.
In our January meeting not only did we enjoy pizza, good conversation and some planning, but we talked about those pesky New Year’s resolutions that we love so much.
I personally enjoy setting goals.  Not only that, but I think it is very important.  It’s like setting the destination on your GPS, if you don’t program something in who knows where you may end up.  Have a destination in mind.  Begin with your core desires.  What do you want this year to look like?  What do you want to do or do better?  When you look back in six months or at the end of the year what do you want to have accomplished?  Once you know what you want then you should ask yourself why.  If you are not very clear about the why chances are you won’t have success in achieving this goal.  So get clear on the why and then break down into smaller steps how you will accomplish it.  Put it on your calendar and make it part of your schedule.  Create habits.  Do the things that scare you.  Do the things you keep putting off.  Remember, if you have to eat a frog do it first thing in the morning.

We gifted everyone small notebooks to get you started on writing down goals and also to keep track of the tender mercies, and the blessings that appear in our lives.  Remember, remember is what we are taught in the scriptures and if you are like me you won’t remember a thing if you don’t write it down.  I challenge you to set some goals this year and to write down the things you are grateful for.  Let’s have a wonderfully healthy year filled with loads of gratitude!

Relief Society Enrichment Meetings

These two Top 10 List's were found on Sugardoodle.net. I wanted to share them because they are great! The RS Presidency and Enrichment Board plan activities with each one of you in mind. We hope each one of you will attend when you can. You all have something unique to contribute to our Relief Society sisterhood.

Top 10 Reasons why NOT to Attend Enrichment.

1.     My house is a mess!   I would rather stay home and clean. (Ha!)

 2.     I attended Enrichment Night in 1997.  Why do I need to attend another one?

 3.     I don't like having 2 hours away from the house every month.

 4.     I couldn't possibly take a night off from watching my favorite TV shows.

 5.     I am so gifted in the "spiritual" department.  I don't need to learn anything.

 6.     I don't like getting together with sisters of the same religion.

 7.     I don't like learning things like how to use time more wisely, tips for Family Home Evening, Money Management, etc.

 8.     My children and/or husband love me to spend all my time with them and not have any outside interests.

 9.     I would rather talk with telemarketers than with the women at church.

 10.   I have all the confidence I need!   Why would I want to develop more?

Top 10 Reasons why to attend Enrichment:

1)   Your husband COULD do the dishes while you are gone.

 2)  You won’t have to answer the phone.

 3)   You won’t have to be the referee for the children.

 4)   You won’t have to help with the homework and embarrass yourself  because you don’t know the answers.

 5)   You get to leave your husband with the children.

 6)   Your husband will appreciate you more when you get home! (see #5)

 7)    Adult conversation!

 8)   FREE FOOD (It bears repeating)...it might include chocolate.

 9)   You can learn new crafts to display in your home.

 10)  You get to see who is new in the ward!

Ward Fall Activity - Apple Festival

This year our Relief Society was in charge of the Fall activity. We decided since Fall is apple season it would be fun to have an Apple Festival.

Members brought their favorite "apple" dessert to win the blue ribbon. There was a great array of desserts but I forget to get a picture :(

Some of the games and activites included:

Apple Trivia
(teams showing their knowledge by answering questions)

Apple Bean Bag Toss
(fun for the kids to toss during the evening)

 Name that Apple
(tasting the numbered apples and matching them with the varieties labeled on the board)

Guess How Many
(guess the number of crab apples in the jar)

Other games not pictured:
Hula Hoop
Egg on a spoon races
Sack races
Jump roping contest

The tables were arranged with apples, donuts, and popcorn scattered throughout. Water and apple cider were our beverages.

It was a fun activity and everyone who attended seemed to enjoy the evening.

Homemade Laundry Soup

 Supplies you will need:

1 Bar FELS NAPTHA Soap
1/2 cup Borax
1 Cup Arm & Hammer Washing Soda

Grate 1 bar of Fels NAPTHA soap & melt in 4 cups of water on stove
 Dissolve fully

Then in a 5 gallon bucket add:
3 gallons of hot water, 1/2 cup Borax, and 1 cup Arm and Hammer Washing Soda

Add your melted FELS NAPTHA in 4 cups of water to 5 gallon bucket

Stir until dissolved and let sit for 24 hours
(soap will turn into a gel)

After 24 hours stir and pour into soap bottles
(Doug used a paint mixer in an electric drill - it went MUCH faster than stirring with a stick)

When washing use 1/2 cup per load. OR you can add half water and half soap when dumping into your soap bottles. Then use 1 cup per load if you are using the half water half soap mixture.

The soap may gel over time. Shake container or do the half water half soap to help prevent gelling.

All ingredients can be purchased at Wegman's or any Wal-Mart, Target type store in the detergent isle.

You can pour the soap into an empty detergent bottle or if space allows you can leave it in your 5 gallon bucket and scoop out for each use.

Other things discussed at our Enrichment Night were:

Fabric softener - Dip a wash cloth in liquid fabric softener and let dry. Use wash cloth for use in the dryer. This will eliminate waste of throwing a dryer sheet away each drying cycle.

White Vinegar - Add 1/2 cup of white vinegar to you rinse cycle when washing clothes. This will help decrease static on clothes and also wash away any access detergent left in clothes. The smell of the vinegar goes away by the time the washing/rinse cycle is over.

Borax - This can be used in addition to any detergent to help boost your wash. It is a laundry booster. It's particularly great to use when washing kids clothes or work clothes - clothing that needs a little extra.

FELS NAPTHA - Can be rubbed on stains before washing. Probably used more before Spray N' Wash. A lot cheaper and does a great job. Ivory soap is also great for treating stains.

Thank you to all who were at this Enrichment. Many great comments were shared about how to get better results when washing laundry. Please feel free to leave a comment if I forgot something or you have something to add.
